A Cushion cut diamond engagement ring makes a stunning solitaire engagement ring. It has a modern look whilst having something Olde Worlde about it. And as few brides-to-be choose this cut for their engagement ring, yours will be all the more unique. And that will make it all the more precious. But what is a Cushion cut? And why is it romantic?

The Cushion cut is a cross between an Oval cut diamond and the Old Miner cut which had large open facets. And because this cut was popular in the 19th century and early 20th century in Europe, the Cushion cut is also known as the Old European cut. The modern cut has 64 large facets which allow a great deal of surface reflection, or luster to be seen from the cut gemstone. It is especially suitable for high clarity and high color gemstones.

A Cushion cut gemstone is broadly square, or rectangular with rounded off corners. The softness and apparent plumpness of the design gives rise to its name of Cushion cut or Pillow cut. And the name and appearance of the finished diamond together make this cut widely recognised as a romantic one.

And the romantic connection continues still further in one of the other names for the cut!

The forerunner of the modern cut was popularised before the introduction of electric lights, which meant that it was most often viewed romantically by candlelight. And because that was the lighting which made it sparkle, this cut is also known as the Candlelight cut. Could there be a more romantic name?

So whether you call it an Old Miner, Old European, Cushion, Pillow or Candlelight cut, the uniquely large facets in a high luster gemstone make it a perfect choice for a diamond solitaire ring, especially if it is bezel rather than prong set in order to highlight its uniqueness.

It also looks wonderful when set as the center piece for a three stone diamond trilogy ring. In this setting, it looks best when flanked by oval cut gemstones or something else a little bit unusual again to highlight the unusual cut of the center stone. Another idea would be to enhance it by a small number of channel set stones in the shoulders of the ring. However, ring settings should be kept simple and have clean lines or they risk overpowering the beauty of this cut.

The Cushion cut is reminiscent of by-gone era. Yet it is still a contemporary look and makes the most romantic engagement rings!
