The Cushion cut is a cross between an Oval cut diamond and the Old Miner cut which had large open facets. And because this cut was popular in the 19th century and early 20th century in Europe, the Cushion cut is also known as the Old European cut. The modern cut has 64 large facets which allow a great deal of surface reflection, or luster to be seen from the cut gemstone. It is especially suitable for high clarity and high color gemstones.

The forerunner of the modern cut was popularised before the introduction of electric lights, which meant that it was most often viewed romantically by candlelight.
