Charm bracelets are thought to have originated in Ancient Egypt, where they were used to adorn the bodies of the God Kings so that they might be identified in the After Life and ward off evil spirits. They consisted of chains hung with jewels and trinkets which also represented the wealth of the God King.

These days, charm bracelets have passed into popular culture and have been brought bang up to date by Italian designers. These new designs often include bracelets with integral charms so that the charms actually form part of the bracelet. This style of bracelet is especially popular with people who cannot or do not want to wear dangling charms, and also for gifts for children.

The “original style” of a “ready made” gold or silver bracelet decked out with hanging charms is still very popular, although many people prefer to buy a simple link bracelet and personalise it by adding charms which represent individual events in their lives, such as a baby’s birth, a graduation etc.

Because personalised charms ensure every charm bracelet is unique to the wearer, it also means that charm bracelets make wonderful heirlooms as they tell the story of a departed loved one. In fact charm bracelets are often passed down from mother to daughter for that very reason.
