Gemstone jewelry forms a fine center peice to any collection.  And until recently, the gemstone of choice would probably be a classic precious gemstone, such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and to a lesser extent semi-precious amethysts, garnets and opals. One such gemstone is peridot.

Pronounced “pair-ee-doh”, peridot was popular in early Greek and Roman jewelry. In fact Cleopatra’s renowned “emerald” collection is now thought to have been mostly comprised of peridot gemset jewelry!

Peridots are surrounded by myth, lore and legend! Different peoples through time have believed they have the power to cure asthma, reduce fever and increase the potency of medicines. Such fabled powers probably come from the more unusal sources of peridots.

Peridot is a mined gemstone on Earth, where it is found in Tanzania, Kenya , South Africa and elsewhere.  However, it is also found in extraterrestrial meteorites! Known as pallasites, some meteor peridot has been facetted for fine jewelry!

Peridot is August’s gemstone and ranges from warm lime greens to rich grass greens and from light yellow-green to deep olive. Its sunlit citrus glows has come to symolize warmth and charity.
