Champagne Diamonds – Affordable Colored Diamonds Getting Rarer
Champagne diamonds are colored diamonds which usually occur naturally in just a few locations around the entire world. Mined principally in the Argyle mine in Australia, these diamonds are generally light brown diamonds, or maybe yellowish diamonds with a tint of brown. Like all colored diamonds, their hue originates from a selection of enclosed impurities. Nonetheless, in contrast to various other fancies, champagne diamonds are Type II colored diamonds.
Type I colored diamonds are diamonds whose coloring is produced from external non-diamond sources, particularly enclosed impurities, such as nitrogen plus boron, or even natural radiation. Nitrogen is the most often found impurity and creates Yellowish as well as Orange diamonds. Boron generates fancy Blues. Natural radiation on the other hand, typically produces green-colored diamonds.
Type II fancies are created whenever there is a problem with the crystalline structure of the diamond at the time of its creation. For example, excessive pressures could trigger deformation of the crystal lattice, dispersing light and creating Reds, Pinks, Browns and Champagne diamonds.
Champagne diamonds range in shade from a pale hay brown to a rich deep cognac brown. They are specifically prized for their dazzling brown color, which can certainly also have flashes of gold, red, copper and peach. Champagnes are very lovely gemstones!
The Earth Star and the Golden Jubilee are two of the best known Champagne diamonds. Much more than fifty percent of the 248.9 carats of the diamond rough of the Earth Star was lost at the time it was faceted into a magnificent 111.59 carat cognac colored Pear shape. It is still one of the most significant diamonds of its kind anywhere. But the most important faceted diamond is even now reckoned to be the Golden Jubilee diamond which has a yellowish brown Champagne color and is widely regarded as being the most gorgeous diamond ever.
When they were initially uncovered in the Argyle mine in Australia, Champagnes were thought to be numerous. They were undoubtedly a good deal more plentiful than other sorts of fancy colors of diamonds! And because they are normally significantly more affordable than white colored diamonds, Champagnes continue to make an easily affordable alternative to white diamonds. Having said that, this situation may not last.
Since their discovery, the Argyle mine has continued to be the most important source of Champagnes for the worldwide jewelry markets. In actual fact more than 95% of Champagnes available around the world come from the Argyle mine. Nevertheless, resources are unsurprisingly declining. And because no other source of Champagne diamonds has been discovered, but the desire for Champagnes is still growing, these wonderful diamonds are becoming less available.
Which certainly means their prices will have to climb shortly! Click here to check out our selection of fancies including champagne colored diamonds.
Fancy Colored Diamonds
Fancy colored diamonds show enough hue, or color gradation to be desirable.
Fashionable fancies are champagne, blue, black and chocolate diamonds.
Natural fancy colored diamonds are incredibly rare (and expensive!) so the stunning pieces available here are enhanced fancy colored diamond designs.
Diamond jewelry has long been treasured as a symbol of everlasting love and perfection. The fastest growing diamond market over the past few years has been that for fancy colored diamonds, the rarest and most under-rated of all nature’s gemstones. In fact, celebrity interest in fancy colored diamonds means that the most fashionable, chic pieces of fine jewelry currently contain fancy colored diamonds.

Some of the most famous and valuable diamonds in the world are fancy colored diamonds. They come in every shade of the rainbow. For every 10,000 carats of diamonds that are cut, just one carat may hold fancy color, making natural fancy colored diamonds truly rare.

However, most people have never even heard of colored diamonds, let alone seen intensely colored diamonds. This is because very few natural fancy colored diamonds are ever found, perhaps only about one in a million, so they are hardly ever promoted actively since market demand already exceeds supply.

Fancy colored diamonds are increasingly sought after for their beauty and their investment value. They share the same bright sparkle as white diamonds but the extra color dimension makes them especially desirable.
As they are so rare, colored diamonds are generally only available as small stones. This makes natural fancy colored diamonds the most valuable gemstones in the world.
Natural diamonds are pure crystalline carbon, which formed over millions of years deep in the earth’s crust. Whilst flawless diamonds are found, it is more common for naturally occurring features, know as internal inclusions, to be present. Natural fancy colored diamonds are much rarer and occur when tiny amounts of trace elements, such as nitrogen or boron are present, or if there are miniscule aberrations in the diamond’s perfect crystalline structure at the atomic-level.
However this is not the only source of colored diamonds. Black diamonds are known to be much older than white diamonds and the reason for this was unclear until 2006 when researchers published work proving that components of black diamonds originated in carbon based star explosions predating the formation of the Solar System! Black diamond asteroids over 1KM in diameter are believed to have smashed into the Earth resulting in the highly localised black diamond deposits found today making black diamonds truely extraterrestrial!
Although white diamonds remain the most popular color, diamonds are found in almost every color of the rainbow. Natural red diamonds are undoubtedly the rarest; whilst green and blue diamonds are also exceptionally rare. And natural intense fancy yellow diamonds are so rare that most jewelers will probably never own one.
Most orange coloured diamonds have strong yellow or brown modifiers and champagne diamonds occur naturally in colors ranging from light straw to rich cognac. Pinks and blue fancy diamonds are probably the rarest of all the regularly traded fancy colors.
Because natural fancy colored diamonds are very rare, they command high prices, ranging from expensive to priceless. High prices and rarity has meant that the increasing demand for these beautiful gemstones is being increasingly met by enhancing, changing or intensifying the colors of, lesser colored diamonds by irradiation or heat treatment. Enhanced, or treated, diamonds are cheaper than naturally colored diamonds, are still very beautiful, and of course are still real mined diamonds!
Whereas white diamonds are graded according to their cut, carat, clarity and (lack of) color, fancy colored diamonds are graded according to their cut, carat, clarity and intensity of color saturation. As the shape and proportion of the gemstone are essential factors in maximising the beauty of color saturation, “cut” is perhaps even more important for fancy colored diamond than for near-colorless ones. In contrast, “clarity” is less important than for a white diamond since most colored diamonds contain some inclusions and the depth of color saturation often makes inclusions harder to see.
Fancy colored diamonds are particularly beautiful when combined in designs with white diamonds, although fancy solitaire rings are timelessly popular. Fancies are scarce commodities and demand for them is not just a whim of fashion but likely to stay.
Because fancy colored diamonds are very fashionable and each stone is unique, every piece of fancy diamond jewellery is distinctive. Fancy diamonds make a sublime statement in fine jewelry.
