Amethyst rings have been highly valued for centuries. In days gone by, the deepest purple amethysts were most highly sought after. However, in recent times, there has been a trend towards more pastel gemstone shades, and the palest rose pink/purple amethyst shades are also now in high demand. The current trend for green jewelry has also increased demand for extremely pretty green amethyst rings.

Because of their connection with Royalty and the like, amethyst jewelry, and amethyst rings in particular have largely been reserved for special occasion rings, such as anniversary rings. However, they are increasingly being chosen by February brides, and people born in February as the central gemstone in amethyst engagement rings. And no wonder! Set into precious metal and accompanied by sparkling diamonds, amethyst rings certainly dazzle!

Despite their good looks, amethyst rings are still relatively unusual. Whether channel set as an amethyst eternity band or cabochon mounted and set into white gold or sterling silver, few women, if any will ever see her friend wearing a similar amethyst ring!

Amethyst jewelry is made froma a variety of macrocrystalline quartz which usually occurs in colors ranging from transparent pastel roses to deepest purples. The color hue is due to the presence of iron. One of the properties of iron is that it exhibits different colors according to its level of oxidation.

Green amethyst, also known as prasiolite or vermarine, begins as a purple amethyst. The particular amethyst crystals which go to make green amethyst typically come from Brazil and to a lesser extent, Arizona.  When these quartz crystals are exposed to high temperatures and pressures, such as might occur natually in a volcano, or under the artificial conditions of a kiln, the iron within the gemstone becomes more oxidised and appears green.  This turns the amethyst gemstone into a green amethyst.

Green amethysts are believed to have as many healing and spiritualist properties as purple amethyst gemstones.

Green amethyst jewelry is generally a pale to mid green, rather than the eye popping apple and citrus greens of peridot jewelry. For this reason, it is most commonly set into sterling silver, although green amethyst gold jewelry can also be found.
