Women love to co-ordinate their clothes with their accessories. Pearls are ideally suited to do this because these days they range from black to gray, silver, gold, and all the pastel shades from peach to pink and lilac. A gold earring is worn on the ear, typically through a piercing in the earlobe or other external part of the ear, but may also attach via a clip or screw. However, over heavy earrings can be uncomfortable and no matter how beautiful an earring is, if it is too heavy for extended wear it will not be worn. Earring weight is limited by the physical capacity of the earlobe to hold the earring without discomfort or damage to the earlobe or piercing. Because of this, earrings are often made from hollow tube and other weight saving styles.
Earrings are worn around the world in most cultures, and by both sexes. One of the earliest examples of earrings being worn by men comes from the images of Persian soldiers wearing an earring, carved on walls of the palace at Perspolis in ancient Persia. Gold earrings for pierced ears have always been popular with women but became less fashionable for a time in the USA in the early 1920s, due to the rising popularity of clip-on earrings. The alternative, screw-on earrings were never as widely accepted because they were uncomfortable to wear for any length of time; they are rarely seen today.
Stud earrings are a small design, typically a sphere or other object, which rests entirely on the earlobe. They employ a post, which passes through the ear, and are secured by means of a butterfly, which is pushed or screwed onto the post at the back of the earlobe, using a friction or “threaded” screw back construction. The screw back construction is especially secure and is often a preferred option for platinum or gold earrings in which the “stud” feature is a precious gemstone.
Hoop earrings come in many styles. Huggy, or cuff earrings, are a particular design of wide hinged hoop, which pass through the ear by means of a post, and pivot shut to complete a circle, closely enveloping the earlobe. Huggy earrings are often made from gold and are channel set with gemstones. Continuous hoop earrings, such as sleeper earrings, are constructed of a continuous piece of solid metal, which passes through the earlobe and fixes into itself via a grove in such a way that it can be almost completely rotated.
Standard hoop earrings pass through the earlobe by means of a post, which fastens directly into the back of the hoop itself to complete a circle. Spring hoops also form complete circles and stay in place by means of spring force. Open hoop designs do not complete a circle and are fastened by means of posts secured in the same manner as stud earrings.
Sleepers are traditionally gold earrings used as the first earring after piercing, or may be used as the piercing agent themselves.
Simple dangle drop earrings may use the same type of post design as stud earrings but the more complicated, and expensive dangle drop designs typically use a hanger, or lever-back. This is because the basic design of the drop requires the earring to hang in a straight line from base to end. After passing through the ear, the back of the hanger flips up to press against the back of the ear, holding the earring in place.
Some semi-precious gemstone drop earrings use a shepherd’s hook fastening. And dangle gold earrings set with pearls look stylish and have an effortless chic that makes them a perfect accessory for any smart outfit or to coordinate with other pearl jewelry.
Chandelier earrings are an extravagant variation of dangle earring, so called because of their resemblance to chandelier light fittings. Gemset chandelier earrings in gold, silver and platinum erupted into the limelight in the last few years and have truly carved their own niche in the marketplace. Originally inspired by “Red Carpet” designer styles worn by “A” list celebrities, they have become tremendously popular with women of all ages. You cannot go wrong with a fine quality pair of gold chandelier earrings.
